The MH-6J Little Bird is a light transport helicopter used for U.S. special operations. Its design traces back to the Hughes OH-6 and the subsequent Model 500 family. The J-variant was developed from the MD 530 line and is among the signature aircraft of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, better known as the Night Stalkers.
A single turbine engine, a compact fuselage, and a five-blade main rotor give the aircraft a small landing footprint. The two pilots have excellent visibility due to the spherical glazing. Special forces can be transported on outboard benches, allowing them to quickly disembark on a rooftop, narrow street, or other confined landing site.
The MH-6 primarily performs infiltration, evacuation, and liaison tasks. It operates in conjunction with larger transport helicopters and the armed AH-6. Navigation equipment and the use of night-vision devices support operations in darkness, for which the regiment trains extensively.
Little Birds gained widespread fame during the U.S. operation in Mogadishu in 1993. Their history demonstrates how an originally light reconnaissance helicopter could evolve through targeted modifications into a specialized tool for small assault teams.
