The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was designed in the 1950s as a small, relatively simple attack aircraft for the US Navy. Ed Heinemann emphasized low weight and compact dimensions. The aircraft could operate from aircraft carriers without the complicated folding wings of many contemporaries.
A single jet engine powered the Skyhawk. Its small delta wing and simple construction made the aircraft suitable for carrying bombs and other attack payloads. The design featured two 20 mm cannons and, depending on the version, could carry additional fuel tanks.
The A-4P was the Argentine Air Force version based on overhauled A-4Bs. Argentina used these aircraft for attacks on ships and ground targets. During the 1982 Falklands War, A-4Ps flew at low altitudes against British units, under difficult conditions and with heavy losses.
The Skyhawk family was produced from the 1950s through the 1970s and found many export customers. The A-4P represents a particular chapter in which an older, compact attack aircraft still played a central combat role.
