IJN Type Ko Destroyer Nowaki "Battle of the Philippine Sea" | 40130 | Hasegawa | 1:350
The Nowaki was a Japanese Kagerō-class destroyer that entered service in 1941. The class was designed for high-speed fleet operations and powerful torpedo attacks. Its long, slender hull and combination of guns and torpedoes suited the Japanese tactics for nighttime surface combat.
Steam turbines gave the ship a high speed. The original main armament consisted of 12.7 cm guns in twin turrets, supplemented by 61 cm Type 93 torpedoes. During the war, the anti-aircraft armament was modified as aerial attacks became an increasing threat.
Nowaki participated in several operations in the Pacific and in the campaign around the Philippine Sea in June 1944. In addition to attacks, the duties of a destroyer included escorting, protecting larger ships, and rescuing shipwreck survivors.
In October 1944, Nowaki was sunk during the Battle of Leyte Gulf after the ship had picked up survivors from the cruiser Chikuma. Its history illustrates both the offensive role and the vulnerability of Japanese destroyers in the final phase of the Pacific War.
