IJN Battleship Nagato "Battle of the Philippine Sea" | 40105 | Hasegawa | 1:350
The Japanese battleship Nagato entered service in 1920 and was among the first battleships to feature 41 cm main guns. The eight heavy cannons were housed in four twin turrets. The ship underwent extensive modernization in the 1930s, involving changes to its protection, propulsion, and superstructure.
Steam turbines powered the propellers. The high bridge structure, which later earned the nickname "pagoda mast," provided space for lookouts and fire control equipment. In addition to the main battery, the ship was equipped with secondary guns and an increasingly expanded anti-aircraft array.
At the start of the Pacific War, Nagato was the flagship of the Combined Fleet. In June 1944, it took part in the operations surrounding the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Later that year, it saw action during the battles around the Gulf of Leyte.
Nagato survived the war but was used in the 1946 US nuclear tests at Bikini, sinking after the second test. The ship thus links the era of the great battleships with the dawn of the nuclear age. This model version focuses on its configuration during the 1944 campaign.
