The schwere Wehrmachtschlepper, abbreviated as sWS, was a German half-track developed in the final years of the war for transporting supplies and towing artillery. The wide tracks provided better traction in mud and on poor roads than a conventional truck, while the front wheels handled the steering.
The Panzerwerfer 42 variant combines this chassis with a ten-barrel launcher for 15 cm rockets. The launcher was mounted above a modified cargo area, with additional armor around the cabin and ammunition. The crew could fire a salvo and then relocate.
Rocket artillery was intended to bombard an area with high explosives in a short amount of time. However, the large smoke trail and visible launch flashes made the position quickly identifiable. Mobility was therefore essential to avoid counter-fire.
The sWS version belongs to the late German efforts to combine transport, protection, and rocket armament on a single vehicle. It should be distinguished from the better-known Panzerwerfer on the Maultier chassis. There is less certainty about the precise scale of the operational use of the sWS rocket launcher than there is for the base vehicle; therefore, a cautious historical interpretation is appropriate for this version.
