The F-15J and F-15DJ are Japanese versions of the American McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. Japan selected the aircraft for air defense and had a large portion produced under license by Mitsubishi. Introduction began in the early 1980s.
Two powerful turbofan engines, a large wing, and an intercept radar form the basis of the design. The F-15J is a single-seater, while the F-15DJ features two seats. The two-seater supports education and training without significantly altering the recognizable Eagle shape.
The Japanese aircraft were adapted for national communication and defense systems. Their primary task is to monitor airspace and intercept unknown aircraft. In doing so, pilots work in conjunction with ground radars and other air defense assets.
The Japanese Eagle family received upgrades and various temporary liveries throughout its long service life. Anniversary and exercise markings give individual aircraft their own identity within an otherwise standardized fleet.
The Aggressor unit uses F-15DJs to simulate adversaries during exercises. Distinctive camouflage and experienced instructors help operational squadrons prepare for a variety of aerial combat situations. The 40th Anniversary marking refers to the history of that training mission.
