The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter with a distinctive design: two tail booms and a central nacelle for the pilot and armament. The prototype flew in 1939. The design offered plenty of room for fuel and was adapted for interception, escort, and ground attack roles.
Two Allison V-1710 engines with turbochargers provided the propulsion. The cannons and machine guns were grouped together in the nose, giving the pilot a concentrated stream of fire. In fighter versions, the standard armament consisted of one 20 mm cannon and four 12.7 mm machine guns.
The Lightning was deployed in Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific. Its range was especially valuable over the vast distances of the Pacific Ocean. Richard Bong and Thomas McGuire, two of the most famous American fighter pilots, achieved their victories with P-38s.
A total of 10,038 units were built. In addition to combat versions, unarmed photo-reconnaissance variants appeared. The family remained important until the end of the war and showed that a twin-engine design could be a successful fighter under the right circumstances.
The P-38L was the final major production variant and was delivered starting in June 1944. Improvements to handling and dive performance were part of this late development. The designation L-5-LO refers to a specific production series from Lockheed.
