The T-34/85 appeared in 1944 as an answer to the growing demands placed on Soviet tanks. The familiar T-34 chassis was retained, but it was fitted with a larger turret housing an 85 mm gun. This increased both firepower and working space for the turret crew.
The crew grew to five members. The commander no longer had to act as the gunner simultaneously and could better focus on commanding and observation. The V-2 diesel engine, wide tracks, and sloped hull plates remained characteristic of the design.
Factory No. 112, Krasnoye Sormovo, played an important role in production. Different factories used their own production details, meaning turrets and equipment were not identical everywhere. The designation Zavod 112 refers to that industrial origin.
T-34/85s were deployed during the major Soviet offensives of 1944 and 1945 and remained in use worldwide thereafter. The vehicle became one of the most recognizable tanks of the twentieth century. This version shows the transition to the more powerfully armed late-war tank.
