The Sukhoi Su-33 is the naval variant of the Su-27 family. The aircraft was developed for use from Soviet and later Russian aircraft carriers. The first flight took place in 1987, when the project was still designated as the Su-27K.
The Su-33 was equipped with canards, reinforced landing gear, an arresting hook, and folding wing sections. Two turbofan engines with afterburners provide the propulsion. The large wing and canards assist with the low speeds required for deck operations.
The aircraft takes off using a ski jump and uses arresting cables for landing. Its primary role is fleet air defense, utilizing a cannon and air-to-air missiles. Operational weight and weather conditions influence the possible takeoff configuration.
Production remained limited, and the Su-33 was primarily associated with the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. The type demonstrates the extensive modifications required to make a large land-based fighter suitable for a small, moving flight deck.
