Schnellboot S-26/S-38 | 5625 | Italeri | 1:35
The Schnellboot S-26 and S-38 were fast German torpedo boats that played an important role in maritime operations during the Second World War. These boats were part of a series produced from the late 1930s to the middle of the war and were known for their high speed, long range, and strong seaworthiness. The Schnellboot was powered by three powerful Daimler-Benz diesel engines that together enabled speeds of up to approximately 39 knots, making the ship highly suitable for fast attack missions and patrols.
The armament typically consisted of two 533 mm torpedo tubes at the bow, supplemented by anti-aircraft weaponry such as 20 mm and later 37 mm guns for defense against aircraft and light vessels. Thanks to their speed and maneuverability, these torpedo boats could carry out surprise attacks on convoys and larger warships. In addition, they were used for reconnaissance missions, minelaying, and coastal patrols.
The Schnellboot fleet was used intensively by the Kriegsmarine, especially in the North Sea, the English Channel, and parts of the Mediterranean. These boats posed a constant threat to Allied supply routes and often carried out night attacks on transport convoys. Because of their speed and low silhouette, they were difficult to detect and could quickly withdraw after an attack.
The S-26 and the improved S-38 variant were known for their reliability and innovative hull design, which allowed them to perform better in rough sea conditions than similar torpedo boats of the same period. The Schnellboot was valued by crews for its stability, speed, and offensive power, making the ship one of the most effective fast attack vessels of the war.
This Italeri model is based on these characteristic torpedo boats and represents one of the most recognizable fast attack ships deployed in maritime operations during the Second World War.
