SBD-3 Dauntless | 2841 | Italeri | 1:48

The SBD-3 Dauntless was an American dive bomber that played a crucial role in the Pacific theater during the Second World War. This variant, produced between 1941 and 1943, featured additional armor, improved fuel tanks, and a reinforced cockpit. The aircraft was powered by a Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engine of approximately 1,000 hp, which allowed it to reach speeds of up to 410 km/h. The plane was known for its stability during steep dive-bombing runs and its accurate bombing.

The armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose and one or two 7.62 mm machine guns behind the cockpit. The Dauntless could carry a bomb of up to 725 kg under the fuselage, often supplemented with smaller bombs under the wings. Thanks to dive brakes and precise flight controls, the aircraft could carry out extremely accurate attacks on ships and land targets, making it effective during offensive operations.

More than 5,900 SBD-3 aircraft were deployed from American aircraft carriers and island bases in the Pacific. The aircraft played a decisive role in naval battles such as the Battle of Midway, where Dauntless dive bombers were responsible for disabling multiple Japanese aircraft carriers. This achievement is considered a turning point in the war in the Pacific.

The aircraft was flown by pilots who appreciated the Dauntless for its reliability and precision during high-risk dive attacks. Rear gunners contributed to the defense against enemy fighters, allowing the plane to maintain its effectiveness in heavily defended air zones. The nickname Dauntless, meaning fearless, referred to the danger and courage required during attacks under heavy anti-aircraft fire. Despite the arrival of more modern aircraft, the SBD-3 remained a key component of American maritime air operations for the majority of the war.

This Italeri model is based on this iconic dive bomber and represents one of the most recognizable aircraft that played a decisive role in maritime air warfare during the Second World War.
