The Douglas SBD Dauntless was an American dive bomber for the Navy and the Marine Corps. The SBD-3 became available in 1941 and featured improved protection and equipment. The two-man crew consisted of a pilot and a radio operator/gunner.
A Wright R-1820 radial engine provided the propulsion. Perforated dive brakes limited speed during a steep dive, allowing the pilot to aim his bomb accurately. A swing arm carried the heavy bomb clear of the propeller arc.
During the Battle of Midway in June 1942, Dauntless units played a decisive role in disabling Japanese aircraft carriers. The combination of reconnaissance, timing, and concentrated attacks made that deployment particularly important in the Pacific War.
The Dauntless remained useful during later operations as well, although newer dive bombers appeared. The type was built in the thousands. The Midway version connects a technically simple-looking aircraft with one of the most famous turning points in the war at sea.
