The Porsche 956 was developed for the 1982 season according to the new Group C regulations. The design combined an aluminum monocoque with a powerful twin-turbo six-cylinder boxer engine. A carefully shaped underbody generated downforce through ground effect.
The low bodywork and closed cockpit were tailored for high speeds and long races. The regulations made fuel consumption an important part of race strategy, forcing Porsche to improve power, aerodynamics, and efficiency simultaneously.
At the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 956 took the top three spots. Subsequently, the model was also supplied to customer teams. These teams brought their own sponsors and liveries, including the striking orange of Jägermeister.
The 956 was built in small numbers as a pure race car and developed into one of the defining sports prototypes of the eighties. The customer teams contributed significantly to its widespread use and recognizability. This version represents that era in which factory engineering and private racing teams together formed the Group C field.
