P-38 J Lightning | 2834 | Italeri | 1:48
The P-38J Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter aircraft known during the Second World War for its distinctive twin-boom design and versatile operational capabilities. The J-variant was produced between 1943 and 1945 and represented a significant evolution, featuring improved cooling and engine performance. The aircraft was powered by two turbo-supercharged Allison V-1710 V12 engines, each with an output of approximately 1,475 hp. This allowed the aircraft to reach speeds of up to approximately 665 km/h and provided a long range, making it particularly suitable for long-distance missions.
The armament was concentrated in the nose and consisted of one 20 mm cannon and four 12.7 mm machine guns. This configuration ensured high accuracy and powerful firepower without the convergence issues that could occur with wing-mounted armament. In addition, the aircraft could carry bombs or rockets, making it also effective in ground attack and maritime operations.
Thousands of P-38s were produced, and the aircraft was deployed on multiple fronts, including Europe, the Mediterranean, and especially the Pacific. The Lightning played an important role in escort missions, interception tasks, and reconnaissance flights. Thanks to its long range, the aircraft could operate at distances that were difficult for many other fighters to reach.
The P-38 was flown by several successful Allied pilots and built a strong reputation in aerial combat. In the Pacific, the aircraft achieved a favorable ratio of victories to losses, partly due to the combination of speed, climb rate, and heavy armament. The aircraft also became known for long-distance missions that disrupted enemy command structures, which highlighted the strategic value of the plane. The nickname Lightning referred to the aircraft's speed and striking power.
This Italeri model is based on this iconic twin-engine fighter and represents one of the most recognizable aircraft that played a major role in Allied air operations during the Second World War.
