The Mikoyan MiG-31 was developed in the 1970s as a long-range interceptor for Soviet air defense. The prototype flew in 1975. Its shape was related to the MiG-25, but its radar, engines, and crew arrangement were significantly updated.
Two D-30F6 turbofan engines with afterburners provide propulsion. The pilot and weapon systems operator are seated one behind the other. The large radar and long-range missiles were intended to detect and intercept targets over vast areas, even when ground stations were far away.
The MiG-31BM is a modernization of the interceptor. The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal mentioned in the product name historically belongs to specially adapted carrier aircraft, usually designated as the MiG-31K. That strike role must be distinguished from the regular air defense role of the BM.
The subject therefore combines the background of the MiG-31 family with a later missile-carrier configuration. It shows how the high speed and payload capacity of an interceptor could also be utilized for a different mission, without all versions having the same equipment and tasks.
