The Macchi MC.200 Saetta was an Italian fighter aircraft that played a significant role in the early phase of World War II and marked an important step in the modernization of the Italian Air Force. Produced between 1939 and 1942, it was the first all-metal monoplane fighter widely used by Italy. The MC.200 was powered by a Fiat A.74 RC 38 radial engine with an output of approximately 870 hp, allowing it to reach speeds of up to about 500 km/h.

Its armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose. Although this armament was relatively light compared to later fighters, the aircraft was known for its excellent maneuverability, stability, and robust construction. These characteristics made the aircraft effective in air combat at low and medium altitudes and suitable for escort and air defense missions.

Approximately 1,150 MC.200s were produced. The aircraft was deployed on multiple fronts, including North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Italian mainland, and the Eastern Front. The fighter played a crucial role in air defense and tactical support for ground troops. Particularly in North Africa, the aircraft was valued for its reliability and good performance under extreme climatic conditions.

The MC.200 was flown by various Italian fighter squadrons and was known as a stable and reliable aircraft that performed well in dogfights. Although it was later succeeded by more modern fighters, it remained respected for its flight characteristics and operational versatility. Its nickname Saetta, meaning lightning bolt, referred to the speed and striking power it symbolized.
