Macchi Mc.200 Saetta | 2815 | Italeri | 1:48
The Macchi MC.200 Saetta was an Italian fighter aircraft that played an important role in the early stages of World War II and represented a significant step in the modernization of the Italian Air Force. The aircraft was produced between 1939 and 1942 and was the first all-metal monoplane fighter to be deployed on a large scale by Italy. The MC.200 was powered by a Fiat A.74 RC 38 radial engine with an output of approximately 870 hp, which allowed it to reach speeds of up to about 500 km/h.
Its armament consisted of two 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose of the aircraft. Although this armament was relatively light compared to later fighters, the aircraft was known for its excellent maneuverability, stability, and sturdy construction. These characteristics made the aircraft effective in dogfights at low to medium altitudes and suitable for escort and air defense missions.
Approximately 1,150 units of the MC.200 were produced. The aircraft was deployed on multiple fronts, including North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Italian mainland, and the Eastern Front. The fighter played a significant role in air defense and tactical support for ground troops. Particularly in North Africa, the aircraft was valued for its reliability and good performance under extreme climate conditions.
The MC.200 was flown by various Italian fighter squadrons and was known as a stable and reliable aircraft that performed well in dogfights. Although the aircraft was later succeeded by more modern fighters, it remained respected for its flight characteristics and operational versatility. The nickname Saetta, which means lightning bolt, referred to the speed and striking power that the aircraft symbolized.
This Italeri model is based on this historical fighter and represents one of the most distinctive aircraft deployed during the early air operations of the Italian Air Force in World War II.
