The M4 Sherman became the main American medium tank from 1942 onwards. Its design was intended for mass production, ease of maintenance, and versatility. By distributing production across various factories, large numbers could be supplied to American and Allied units.
The Sherman had a five-man crew and a rotating turret. Armament, engine, and hull construction varied by version. The vehicle was required to both combat enemy armored vehicles and support infantry with high-explosive shells and machine-gun fire.
Shermans appeared on virtually all Allied fronts. In Europe, they worked closely with infantry, artillery, and engineers. Reliable supply chains and the ability to quickly repair damaged tanks were major advantages of the large, standardized fleet.
Production continued until the end of the war and included numerous improvements. The family remained in service in various countries even after 1945. Thus, the Sherman is not just a combat vehicle, but also a recognizable example of the American industrial contribution to the Allied war effort.
The M4A3 with 76 mm gun combined a Ford GAA V8 engine with improved anti-tank armament. Wet stowage refers to ammunition storage with liquid protection around the racks, intended to reduce the risk of ammunition fire after a hit.
