The Opel Blitz became one of the most widely used German trucks of the Second World War. The name encompassed several commercial vehicle series. The military three-ton class was important for the transport of troops, ammunition, fuel, and other supplies.
The Type A had four-wheel drive and better off-road capabilities than the standard rear-wheel-drive version. A six-cylinder petrol engine provided the power. The simple cab and cargo bed were focused on practical use and relatively easy maintenance.
Blitz trucks appeared on almost all German fronts. In North Africa, heat and dust were hard on the machinery, while on the Eastern Front, mud and cold caused major problems. The drivetrain and tires could only partially cope with these conditions.
Production took place on a large scale throughout the war. The truck shows how important daily transport was behind the combat units. Without the supply of fuel, food, and ammunition, tanks and artillery could not continue to perform their tasks either.
