The Junkers Ju 88 was one of the most versatile German aircraft of the Second World War. The prototype first flew in 1936. The original bomber was further developed into a reconnaissance aircraft, night fighter, and specialized attack machine.
The A-4 was an important bomber variant with two Jumo 211 engines and a larger wingspan than the early A-series. Four crew members shared the compact front fuselage. The aircraft could carry bombs internally and on external hardpoints.
Ju 88s were deployed on almost all European fronts. They attacked airfields, ships, lines of communication, and other targets. The design offered sufficient payload capacity and room for development to be continuously assigned new tasks throughout the war.
Production of the family continued until the final years of the war. The history of the Ju 88 shows how one basic design could be adapted for very different missions. Consequently, the specific version is important for the armament, crew roles, and historical use.
