The Junkers Ju-87B Stuka was an iconic German dive bomber that became a significant symbol of the Luftwaffe in the early phase of World War II. This variant was produced from 1936 to 1939 and was the first mass-produced model of the Ju-87 series. It was powered by a Junkers Jumo 210D V12 engine of approximately 680 hp, allowing it to reach speeds of up to about 375 km/h.
Its armament consisted of two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns in the nose and one 7.92 mm MG 15 in the rear cockpit for the gunner. Additionally, the aircraft could carry a bomb load of 250–500 kg, sometimes supplemented by an external bomb under the wing. The design incorporated automatic dive brakes, making the aircraft very effective for precision attacks during steep dives.
Over 1,200 Ju-87B units were produced. The aircraft was deployed on various fronts, including Poland, France, and North Africa, playing a key role in Blitzkrieg tactics. It was known for its psychological effect due to its distinctive siren sound, the Jericho-Trompete, produced during dive attacks.
The Ju-87B is remembered for its precision, maneuverability in dives, and significant psychological impact on enemy troops. Its nickname Stuka is an abbreviation of Sturzkampfflugzeug, which means dive bomber.
This Italeri model is based on this iconic dive bomber and represents one of the most recognizable aircraft of the German Air Force during the early years of World War II.
