The F-16C/D Night Falcon represents the evolution of the Fighting Falcon into a fighter capable of conducting precision strikes in darkness and adverse weather conditions. The F-16 began in the 1970s as a relatively light, agile fighter. Later production series received more extensive radar, navigation, and weapons systems.
The Night Falcon designation is primarily associated with the Block 40/42 generation and the LANTIRN system. This uses external pods for infrared imaging, low-altitude navigation, and target designation. The F-16C has one seat, while the F-16D is a two-seater.
A single afterburning turbofan engine, fly-by-wire flight control, and a high-visibility cockpit form the basis of the design. In addition to the built-in 20mm cannon, the F-16 can carry air-to-air missiles, bombs, and other mission loads. The actual armament depends on the task and configuration.
