The Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe was a heavy-lift transport helicopter developed for the U.S. Army in the 1960s. The aircraft was related to the civilian S-64 and featured an open crane design. This allowed for heavy or bulky loads to be carried beneath the fuselage.
Two turbine engines powered the large main rotor. A rear-facing cockpit position assisted in the precise pickup and drop-off of cargo. The helicopter could transport artillery, vehicles, and damaged aircraft, among other loads, without the need for an enclosed cargo bay.
During the Vietnam War, the CH-54 was used for supply, recovery, and specialized transport tasks. The combination with the heavy M-121 bomb refers to clearing terrain, including for helicopter landing zones. The massive explosion was intended to remove vegetation and obstacles.
The CH-54A was the initial production variant, followed later by the more powerful B version. The design was eventually replaced in military service by other heavy-lift helicopters, but the crane concept endured in civilian applications. This release showcases one of the most unusual tasks from the Tarhe's operational history.
