The Sukhoi Su-34 was developed from the Su-27 family as a specialized fighter-bomber for long-range strike missions. The first prototype flew in 1990. Further development and series production spanned the subsequent decades.
The most striking change is the wide forward fuselage featuring two side-by-side crew seats. The cockpit received extra protection and amenities for long missions. Two AL-31 turbofan engines with afterburners, a large wing, and various hardpoints allow for the carriage of fuel and strike weapons.
The Su-34 can track ground targets using radar and other sensors and deploy a wide range of guided and unguided weapons. The aircraft also retained means for self-defense in the air. Its primary function, however, is the attack role, not that of a pure air superiority fighter.
Russian Su-34s have been deployed in conflicts including Syria and the war in Ukraine. As a result, the type has an operational history in contemporary conflicts. Its design demonstrates how an existing fighter family can be radically modified when crew comfort, range, and the carriage of strike weapons become higher priorities.
