The Blohm & Voss BV 141 was a German reconnaissance aircraft with an exceptional asymmetrical shape. Richard Vogt designed an engine fuselage with a tail on one side and a separate crew gondola next to it. The first prototype flew in 1938.
The unusual layout was intended to provide the crew with a wide view for reconnaissance and observation. In a conventional single-engine aircraft, the engine and fuselage obstructed part of the view. Vogt balanced weight and aerodynamic forces so that the asymmetrical aircraft could still be flown in a controllable manner.
The later BV 141 B was equipped with a BMW 801 radial engine and further adjustments were made to the wing and tail. However, the aircraft remained a development and pre-production project. The Focke-Wulf Fw 189 ultimately fulfilled the primary German requirement for a tactical reconnaissance aircraft of this class.
As a result, the BV 141 did not see widespread operational service. Its significance lies primarily in its unique design solution and the attempt to combine excellent visibility for the crew with a single engine. The model represents one of the most striking experimental aircraft designs from the period surrounding the Second World War.
