The BMW 2002 tii appeared in 1971 as a high-performance version of the compact BMW 02 series. The two-door body offered the practicality of a regular passenger car, while the engineering was clearly focused on sporty driving.
The two-liter four-cylinder engine used mechanical Kugelfischer fuel injection and produced 130 hp. The engine was mounted in the front and drove the rear wheels. Its relatively low weight and suspension made the tii a lively car on winding roads.
Production ran from 1971 to 1975. The tii formed an important part of BMW's sporty image and aligned with the successes of the 02 family in touring car races and rallies. The model was positioned between the standard 2002 and the even rarer turbo version.
The chin spoiler on this version emphasizes the sporty appearance of the small sedan. The historical significance of the 2002 tii lies in the combination of an understated body and sophisticated engine technology. That concept would remain recognizable in later compact BMWs as well.
