F-86F-40 Sabre | 12369 | Academy | 1:48
The North American F-86 Sabre was developed shortly after World War II as a swept-wing jet fighter. The prototype flew in 1947. The F-86 became best known for air combat during the Korean War, where early Sabres faced the MiG-15.
A General Electric J47 jet engine provided the propulsion. The standard armament consisted of six 12.7 mm machine guns in the nose. A radar rangefinder helped determine the correct aiming distance.
The F-86F featured improved performance and various wing developments. The F-40 wing combined a greater wingspan with leading-edge slats, which improved low-speed characteristics. This late configuration was also applied to other Sabres.
The F-86F-40 was built in the 1950s and found several foreign users. It belongs to the further development after the best-known early Korean air battles. The type shows how changes to the wing could increase the versatility of an existing fighter aircraft.
