The North American F-86D Sabre Dog was a specialized interceptor for all-weather use. Although the name referred to the standard Sabre, the D-version featured a heavily modified nose with radar and a different armament configuration. The prototype first flew in 1949.
A J47 jet engine with afterburner provided the propulsion. Instead of the daylight fighter's machine guns, the F-86D carried a retractable tray of 24 unguided rockets. Radar and fire control helped a single pilot intercept a bomber without the need for a separate radar operator.
Production ran in the early fifties and yielded 2,506 aircraft. The Sabre Dog was used by the US Air Force and various allies. Japan adopted the type for the development of its post-war air defense.
The JASDF version illustrates this Japanese role. The F-86D represents a short but important phase in which radar and rockets began to replace classic fighter armament. The distinctive nose makes it easy to distinguish from other Sabres.
