The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was developed in the late 1950s for the U.S. Navy. The large twin-engine aircraft could carry powerful radars and a significant weapons load. It grew to become one of the most widely used Western fighter aircraft of the Cold War.
Two J79 jet engines with afterburners provided high speed. The pilot and radar intercept officer sat in tandem. Early naval versions did not have a built-in cannon and were primarily equipped with Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles for air combat.
Phantoms operated from aircraft carriers during the Vietnam War and performed both interception and ground-attack missions. Their high engine power and broad operational capabilities came with high demands on crew and maintenance. More than 5,000 Phantoms of various versions were built.
The naval family was repeatedly improved during its service life. New radar, electronics, and modifications to the wing and control system extended its serviceability. As a result, the F-4 became a recognizable fixture on the flight decks of aircraft carriers for several decades.
The F-4J received an improved radar and weapons system, among other updates. VF-84 Jolly Rogers was recognizable by the skull and crossbones on the tail. That unit insignia made the Phantom a familiar image of U.S. naval aviation.
