F-22 Raptor - Complete Set For Modeling | 72011 | Italeri | 1:72
The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor was developed as an American air superiority fighter for the generation after the F-15. The first production-representative test flight took place in 1997 and the aircraft became operational in 2005. The design combines low radar observability with high flight performance.
Two F119 engines with thrust-vectoring nozzles provide propulsion. The Raptor can fly supersonically under suitable conditions without afterburners. Weapons are primarily carried in internal bays to limit radar reflection.
An integrated radar and other sensors help the pilot form a situational overview of the airspace. In addition to air-to-air missiles, the aircraft can carry certain precision weapons for ground targets. The built-in 20 mm cannon offers an additional capability at close range.
Production was limited to a relatively small American fleet; the aircraft was not exported. The F-22 represents a significant step toward combat aircraft in which design, sensors, and data processing together determine operational capabilities.
