F-111A Aardvark | 91232 | Italeri | 1:72
The General Dynamics F-111 was developed in the 1960s as a high-speed, long-range attack aircraft. Its first flight took place in 1964. The design featured variable-sweep wings, allowing the wing position to be adjusted for takeoff, landing, and high-speed flight.
Two TF30 turbofan engines with afterburners provided propulsion. The two crew members sat side-by-side in a capsule that could be ejected as a whole in an emergency. Terrain-following radar supported high-speed, low-altitude flight, even in poor visibility.
The F-111A was deployed during the Vietnam War. The initial deployment in 1968 faced challenges, while subsequent operations in 1972 yielded clearly better results. The aircraft was capable of attacking distant targets with a combination of range, speed, and a significant bomb load.
The family was further developed into multiple versions. The A-version represents the early operational form of an ambitious design that brought together aerodynamics, engines, and advanced electronics. Its history also illustrates how much development was required to use new technologies reliably.
