F-104G Starfighter "Taiwan Air Force" | 09365 | Hasegawa | 1:48
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was developed in the 1950s as a very fast fighter with a small, thin wing. The prototype flew in 1954. The powerful J79 jet engine and slender fuselage enabled high speeds and rapid climbs.
The aircraft had a built-in 20 mm Vulcan cannon and could carry missiles or other payloads. The small wing placed high demands on the pilot at low speeds. For landing, the Starfighter used a system that blew air over the wing to increase lift.
The F-104G was modified for more versatile use, with a reinforced structure and more extensive avionics. It was put into service by several European countries and other users, and was also built under license. The F-104S was a further Italian development for interception and attack missions.
The Starfighter became a characteristic aircraft of the Cold War. Its history includes high-speed interception, tactical strike missions, and reconnaissance, as well as intensive training and strict requirements for maintenance and operating conditions.
Taiwan used various Starfighter versions for air defense and reconnaissance. The F-104G was part of that fleet. These markings link the well-known NATO-era aircraft to the unique security situation around the Taiwan Strait.
