Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.F1(F) w/Schürzen - The Battle of Kursk 1943 | 06975 (6975) | Dragon | 1:35

The Panzer IV was originally intended as a support tank for German armored divisions. The Ausf. F1 retained the short 7.5 cm KwK 37 gun, which was primarily used to fire high-explosive shells against infantry and field positions. The designation F1 distinguishes this version from the later F2, which was equipped with a long anti-tank gun.

The vehicle had a crew of five, a Maybach gasoline engine, and a chassis with leaf-spring suspension. The F-series from 1941 received, among other things, heavier armor and wider tracks. When more heavily armored opponents appeared, it became clear that the short gun was less suitable for combat against modern tanks.

Older vehicles, however, remained in use and could later be fitted with additional equipment. The "Schürzen" were separate protective plates along the hull and turret. They are among the modifications that were also applied to previously built tanks starting in 1943.

The reference to Kursk in the product name places this combination in the summer of 1943. The subject shows how different production series and later-mounted improvements could exist side-by-side within the same unit. A tank did not, therefore, always retain the exact configuration with which it had left the factory throughout its service life.
