The Jagdpanzer 38 was developed in 1944 based on the Czech tank building tradition from which the Panzer 38(t) also originated. This compact vehicle was intended to provide a usable tank destroyer in larger numbers. Today, it is usually referred to as the Hetzer.
A 7.5 cm Pak 39 gun was mounted in a low, enclosed superstructure with highly sloped armor plates. The gasoline engine was located in the rear. Four crew members shared a cramped workspace, where the asymmetrical placement of the gun had consequences for its operation.
The low silhouette was well-suited for camouflaged positions and ambushes. Many vehicles were assigned to anti-tank units of infantry divisions. There, they provided mobile firepower to formations that were otherwise often dependent on towed artillery and limited motorized transport.
Production took place during the final war years in occupied Czechia. After the war, development continued in a modified form, including as the Swiss G13. The subject illustrates how a relatively small chassis was utilized for a powerful defensive role, with clear limitations regarding crew comfort and situational awareness.
The Flammpanzer 38 was a rare conversion where a flamethrower took the place of the anti-tank gun. This version was intended for attacks on nearby positions and therefore had a different operational role than the standard Jagdpanzer. The two options in the kit thus represent different tasks.
