The German advance on Moscow stalled in the autumn and winter of 1941 due to Soviet resistance, exhausted supply lines, and deteriorating weather conditions. Mud was followed by severe frost. From December onwards, a Soviet offensive forced German units to retreat in various locations.
Infantrymen had to establish positions, keep weapons operational, and protect themselves against the cold. Winter equipment was not sufficiently available everywhere. Greatcoats, extra layers of clothing, and improvised protection therefore became an important part of the front-line appearance.
