AW101 Merlin HM.1 | 1486 | Italeri | 1:72
The Merlin HM.1 was the first British maritime version of the EH101, later named the AW101. The program resulted from collaboration between Westland and Agusta. The first prototype flew in 1987, and the Royal Navy brought the Merlin into operational service around the turn of the millennium.
Three turbine engines drive a large five-blade main rotor. The spacious cabin accommodates operators and specialized equipment. The maritime version was configured for detecting and engaging submarines, using radar, acoustic sensors, and torpedoes.
The helicopter can operate from naval ships and extends their observation range. The crew searches for underwater contacts, processes sensor data, and works in conjunction with the mother ship. In addition to anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue and transport missions are possible.
The HM.1 replaced older maritime helicopters and formed the basis for later modernization to the HM.2 standard. The type illustrates the development of the naval helicopter into a flying sensor platform, in which mission equipment and crew collaboration are as important as flight performance.
