Avro Lancaster B.III (SPECIAL) 'THE DAMBUSTERS' | A09007A | Airfix | 1:72

The Avro Lancaster became one of the most important British heavy bombers of the Second World War. The design evolved from the twin-engine Manchester but was equipped with four Merlin engines. Its first flight took place in 1941, and it entered operational service in 1942.

The spacious bomb bay allowed for the transport of a variety of very heavy loads. Seven crew members divided the work of flying, navigating, bombing, radio operations, and defense. The Lancaster featured machine-gun turrets but remained vulnerable to night fighters and anti-aircraft fire.

The aircraft formed a key part of RAF Bomber Command and was used extensively for night-time bombing raids. Specialized missions also made use of its load-carrying capacity. The B.I and B.III differed primarily in the origin of their Merlin engines: the B.III used Packard-built units.

More than 7,000 Lancasters were produced, primarily in Great Britain and also in Canada. After the war, roles included reconnaissance and maritime duties. The family represents the rapid development of heavy four-engine aircraft during the war.

The B.III Special was modified for Operation Chastise on the night of May 16-17, 1943. No. 617 Squadron used the Barnes Wallis-designed Upkeep bomb against German dams. The special suspension, rotation drive for the bomb, and modified equipment distinguish this Dambuster version from a standard Lancaster.
