AV-8A Harrier | 00240 | Hasegawa | 1:72
The Hawker Siddeley Harrier was the first widely used operational combat aircraft with short take-off and vertical landing capabilities. The design originated from the experimental P.1127 and Kestrel. The first Harriers entered service at the end of the 1960s.
A Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine directed its thrust through four swiveling nozzles. At low speeds, the pilot could direct the jet blast downward. A short take-off run made it possible to carry more fuel and weapons than with a fully vertical take-off.
The original Harrier was primarily used for ground attack and reconnaissance. It could operate from dispersed locations, reducing dependency on large airfields. Gun pods, bombs, and rockets formed possible mission loads.
The concept required special flying skills and careful ground maintenance, but offered operational flexibility. The Harrier thus became a key example of a different approach to combat aircraft basing during the Cold War.
The AV-8A was the early US Marine Corps version. It provided the US Marine Corps with an attack aircraft capable of operating close to supported troops. Experience with this type formed the basis for the later, heavily modified AV-8B.
