A-10C Thunderbolt II | 01573 | Hasegawa | 1:72
The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II was developed for close air support of ground forces. The prototype flew in 1972 and operational service began in the 1970s. The design emphasized survivability, ease of maintenance, and effective operation at relatively low speeds.
Two TF34 turbofan engines are mounted high on the rear fuselage. The straight wing provides many hardpoints. A protective titanium structure surrounds the pilot, while critical systems were designed with damage resistance in mind.
The seven-barreled 30 mm GAU-8/A cannon is its most famous weapon. In addition, the A-10 can carry missiles, bombs, and other payloads. The aircraft was deployed during the Gulf War and later operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, among others.
The A-10C was created by modernizing existing aircraft. A digital cockpit, improved communications, and capabilities for precision weapons increased its versatility. The C-version demonstrates how sensors and electronics kept a specialized Cold War aircraft relevant for changing support missions.
