The 15 cm sFH 13/1 on Lorraine chassis originated from the German reuse of captured French equipment. After the 1940 campaign, many Lorraine 37L tracked tractors became available. In 1942, chassis were converted into self-propelled artillery so that heavy howitzers could better keep pace with moving frontline troops.
The existing engine and narrow tracked chassis remained the foundation. An open fighting compartment with thin armor plates and a 15 cm howitzer was added to the rear. A support brace at the back helped absorb the recoil forces when firing. The superstructure offered shelter from shrapnel and light weapons, but provided no protection from above.
Its main task was indirect fire support. The crew engaged targets behind the front line and relied on additional ammunition supplies for prolonged engagements. Consequently, the vehicle was not a tank, despite its tracks and prominent gun.
These converted Lorraine vehicles appeared in North Africa and later in France, among other places. They illustrate how the German armed forces utilized captured vehicles to reduce shortages of mobile artillery. The combination of a French transport chassis and an older German howitzer gives this subject its unique historical character.
