USN F4F-4 Wildcat "Battle of Midway" | 12355 | Academy | 1:48
The Grumman F4F Wildcat was the primary American carrier-based fighter during the early phase of the Pacific War. The design combined a robust construction with a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engine. The F4F-4 became available in 1942.
This version featured folding wings, allowing more aircraft to be carried on an aircraft carrier. The armament consisted of six 12.7 mm machine guns. Protection for the pilot and fuel helped survival chances but also increased weight.
During the Battle of Midway in June 1942, Wildcats protected American aircraft carriers and escorted attack aircraft. Against the agile Zero, cooperation and appropriate tactics were essential. John Thach developed a mutual defensive maneuver that became known as the Thach Weave.
The Wildcat was later replaced on large aircraft carriers by more powerful fighters, but remained important on smaller escort carriers. The F4F-4 from Midway represents the period when U.S. naval aviators had to withstand a strong opponent with limited resources.
