The Grumman A-6 Intruder was designed as an attack aircraft for operations from American aircraft carriers. The first flight took place in 1960 and the A-6A entered service in 1963. The design focused on attacks in poor visibility and darkness.
The pilot and bombardier/navigator sat side-by-side under a wide canopy. Two J52 jet engines provided the propulsion. The DIANE navigation and attack system helped the crew find targets and release weapons when visual observation was difficult.
The Intruder could carry a significant bomb load on multiple hardpoints. The aircraft had no built-in cannon and was primarily intended for delivering strike weapons. The crew often flew at low altitude to hinder enemy detection and air defenses.
From 1965, the A-6A flew combat missions over Vietnam. Later, the family was further developed, including the A-6E and specialized tanker and electronic versions. The Intruder represents the shift from visual attacks to missions centered on radar, navigation computers, and cooperation between two crew members.
