The Toyota 88C is one of the sports prototypes with which Toyota gained experience in international endurance racing in the late eighties. The design was the result of a collaboration with Dome and TOM'S. Its low body and enclosed cockpit were consistent with the Group C and GTP racing cars of that period.
A mid-mounted turbocharged engine powered the rear wheels. The body and underfloor were designed to generate downforce at high speeds while keeping air resistance to a minimum. For long races, finding the right balance between power, fuel consumption, and reliability was of great importance.
The Daytona version refers to its participation in American IMSA GTP racing. The circuit combines a twisty infield with fast banked turns. As a result, the brakes, tires, transmission, and engine were subjected to heavy, prolonged strain.
These cars were purpose-built racing machines and were only manufactured in small numbers. The 88C represents a development phase in which Japanese manufacturers began to compete more prominently in the international battle between sports prototypes. The endurance racing experience contributed to later Toyota racing programs.
