Tornado GR.1 Desert Storm | 2521 | Italeri | 1:32
The Panavia Tornado was born from collaboration between the United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy. The prototype flew in 1974. The British GR.1 was the strike aircraft version, equipped for high-speed, low-altitude missions in diverse weather conditions.
Two RB199 turbofan engines with afterburners and variable-sweep wings form the basis. The pilot and navigator sit in tandem. Terrain-following radar and navigation equipment support flights close to the landscape, while various bombs and other strike weapons can be carried.
During the 1991 Gulf War, RAF Tornado GR.1s were deployed as part of Operation Granby. In the initial phase, they attacked targets including airfields with JP233 charges and bombs. Later, the focus shifted to medium-altitude strikes using precision-guided weapons and laser targeting.
The recognizable temporary desert paint scheme and personal nose art are associated with that campaign. The subject shows how an aircraft designed for the European Cold War had to be deployed in a different environment and adopt new operational tactics during the mission.
