The Supermarine Spitfire is undoubtedly one of the most iconic fighter aircraft of World War II. Developed as a rapid response to the rise of the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190, the Mk. IX reestablished British air superiority over Western Europe. This type is therefore considered decisive in leveling the playing field in 1942–1943.

The Spitfire Mk. IX combined the legendary agility of earlier Spitfires, with variants equipped with a more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 series engine, fitted with a two-stage supercharger. This gave the aircraft excellent performance at higher altitudes, with a top speed of approximately 650 km/h (400 mph). Standard armament consisted of two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns, making the Mk. IX highly effective in both aerial combat and ground attack.

The aircraft was used extensively during major operations such as D-Day and the liberation of Europe. A total of approximately 5,665 Spitfire Mk. IX aircraft were produced. This Italeri model is based on this successful and widely deployed variant and represents one of the most defining fighter aircraft of the Allied air force.
