Sea Harrier FRS Mk.1 | 00235 | Hasegawa | 1:72
The British Aerospace Sea Harrier FRS.1 was the maritime fighter variant of the Harrier concept. The aircraft first flew in 1978 and entered service with the Royal Navy shortly thereafter. The raised cockpit and radar nose distinguished it from the RAF attack versions.
A Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine with four swiveling nozzles enabled short take-offs and vertical landings. A ski jump was often used from British aircraft carriers. The Blue Fox radar and Sidewinder missiles supported fleet air defense.
During the 1982 Falklands War, Sea Harriers operated from HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible. They performed combat air patrols and intercepted Argentine aircraft. Their role differed from that of the Harrier GR.3, which was primarily used for ground attack missions.
The FRS.1 was later further developed, but the early version remained strongly associated with the South Atlantic campaign. The type demonstrates how a compact navy with relatively small aircraft carriers could still deploy its own fighter aircraft capability.
