The Jagdpanther was a German tank destroyer based on the Panther chassis. From 1944 onwards, it combined a low, sloped-armor fighting compartment with the long 8.8 cm Pak 43 cannon. The absence of a rotating turret allowed for the mounting of this heavy weapon.
A Maybach V12 gasoline engine powered the vehicle. Five crew members operated within the hull. The cannon had limited traverse, requiring the driver to aim the entire vehicle when a target lay outside of that angle.
The Jagdpanther was primarily intended to engage enemy tanks from a distance. The combination of a powerful gun and sloped frontal armor was effective from prepared positions. At the same time, the vehicle remained dependent on maintenance, fuel, and well-organized recovery.
Only a few hundred units were built. Jagdpanthers saw action in Normandy, the Ardennes, and on the Eastern Front, among other places. Due to their limited availability, they could not become a general replacement for other tank destroyers. The design is primarily considered a characteristic example of the German choice for specialized, heavily armed vehicles in the final years of the war.
The winter crew places this model in the conditions of cold-weather campaigns. Winter clothing and adapted equipment were necessary to endure a prolonged stay in and around the vehicle. This also gives the tank destroyer a recognizable human context.
