The Sd.Kfz.167 Sturmgeschütz IV was a German assault gun and tank destroyer from World War II, developed as an emergency solution after heavy Allied bombings of Alkett's StuG III production facilities in November 1943. To continue the much-needed production of Sturmgeschütze, the proven StuG superstructure was combined with the Panzer IV chassis.
The StuG IV was deployed on both the Eastern and Western Fronts from late 1943 and proved particularly effective in defensive roles. Armed with the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 cannon, the vehicle was well capable of eliminating Allied tanks at medium range. The frontal armour was up to 80 mm, which, combined with its low silhouette, ensured a good chance of survival in ambushes.
As with all assault guns and tank destroyers without a rotating turret, the advantages lay in simplicity, lower production costs, and a small target, while the lack of a turret limited flexibility in mobile combat. The StuG IV was powered by a Maybach HL120 TRM petrol engine, had a top speed of approximately 38 km/h, and was known to be more reliable than heavier, more complex designs.
In total, approximately 1,100 units of the Sturmgeschütz IV were produced. This Italeri model is based on this practical and effective German assault gun and tank destroyer and represents a typical example of late-war German armoured solutions.
