The RF-4 Phantom II was the photo-reconnaissance version of the well-known F-4 family. The nose was modified to house cameras and other reconnaissance equipment. The aircraft was required to gather information at high speeds, often over areas with strong air defenses.
The RF-4C was developed for the U.S. Air Force. The RF-4E combined the reconnaissance nose with a later-developed Phantom base and was supplied to various export customers. Two J79 engines provided both versions with high speed and a high rate of climb.
The two-man crew had to manage navigation, sensor use, and threat avoidance. Reconnaissance flights provided information on airfields, infrastructure, and troop movements. After strikes, photos helped determine what had actually been hit.
RF-4s were deployed during the Vietnam War and by various air forces during the Cold War. The reconnaissance mission required dedicated equipment and procedures, even though the aircraft looked much like the fighter versions. This model highlights that specialized and often high-risk role.
