The Dassault Rafale was developed as a versatile French combat aircraft for both the air force and the navy. The technology demonstrator flew in 1986. The Rafale B is the two-seater version for use from land bases and received its own prototype in 1993.
Two M88 turbofan engines with afterburners, a delta wing, and canards define its design. Fly-by-wire flight control and integrated sensors support the crew. The two seats can be used for training and for dividing tasks during complex missions.
The Rafale can carry out air defense, ground attacks, reconnaissance, and other tasks. The deployable weapons depend on the software standard and configuration. Throughout its service life, the aircraft has been incrementally improved with new radar, sensor, and weapons capabilities.
The French Air Force brought the Rafale into operational service in the 2000s and has deployed it over Afghanistan, Libya, and the Middle East, among other locations. The B version illustrates the French decision to bring different missions together within a single family of aircraft.
