The Panther was developed after German forces encountered the Soviet T-34 in 1941. The new tank combined sloped armor with a long 7.5 cm KwK 42 cannon. A Maybach V12 petrol engine, wide tracks, and torsion bar suspension were intended to provide the heavy vehicle with sufficient off-road capability.
The crew consisted of five men. The gunner, loader, and commander worked in the turret, while the driver and radio operator sat in the front. The cannon was especially effective against armored vehicles at longer range, but the vehicle remained vulnerable on its thinner-armored sides.
The Panther appeared on the Eastern Front in 1943. During its first deployment at Kursk, technical problems caused many breakdowns. Later production series received improvements and were also deployed in Italy and Western Europe. Approximately 6,000 Panthers were built across all variants.
The history of the Panther illustrates the trade-off between firepower, protection, and technical reliability. Its combat performance was highly dependent on maintenance, fuel supply, and experienced crews. The vehicle became one of the most recognizable German tanks of the second half of the war.
The Ausf. D was the first series-produced Panther. It belongs to the introduction of the type in 1943 and the initial experiences on the Eastern Front. The early commander's cupola is one of its recognizable exterior features.
